Concept:
The brief for this assignment was to create a packaging design for an unusual object, one that is not commercial. I chose to package an 8ball.
The 8 ball symbolises control and power. In game, the 8-ball is the final ball to be pocketed representing the ability to overcome and reach ambitions. In some subcultures, it also represents rebellion and nonconformity, symbolising unconventionality and individualism. Therefore, when deciding on package’s shape I took these meanings into consideration and decided to package the pool ball individually. I contrasted the roundness of the 8 ball with a rectangular package design, one that resembles a ring box. I was fascinated about how it could be packaged with anticipation. The gesture of opening the box, like one of a jewelry box, evoking a sense of luxury and anticipation.
